About Our Chapter
Up one levelLocal "chapters" across the country train volunteers and assist in raising funds for the summer projects and travel. Our chapter was founded in 1980 and has sent hundreds of Silicon Valley youth to Latin America in efforts to change the world one community at a time -- and promoting the growth of the student volunteers as no other experience could. Training meetings will be held about twice per month in San Jose from November through May to help raise funds for the trip and prepare the student volunteer (and their parents) for their project. Volunteers learn technical building skills, improve their Spanish fluency, think about cross-cultural differences, develop organizational skills, and make new friends. Training is led by Brad Mills. Brad participated in Amigos and then spent two additional years living and working in South America. "Veteran" volunteers (who participated in previous Amigos summers) will assist him in training. The Amigos mission is to improve public health, promote cross-cultural understanding, and encourage youth leadership skills.
